I have a few days off. Not quite a week, but just long enough for a short desert trip via the Eastern Sierra to a mountain range I haven't visited before—the Excelsior Range and Moho Mountain in Nevada.

Happy Canada Day! I'll start the trip with some driving around Mono Lake including a few routes I haven't checked out before.

From Mono Lake forest to Nevada mountain desert in an afternoon, and an easy five-mile hike to get acquainted with the area and enjoy the sunset.

With daytime highs in the low 80s, I wonder if a short but steep hike is a good idea, but it works out well. Roughly 6.5 miles round trip with 2200 feet of elevation gain to the peak at 8805 feet.

Day 4: Crater Mountain plateau in the Mono Craters

Happy July 4th! A nice 7-mile hike in the low 80s before tomorrow's drive home. I walked the edge of this plateau the day I hiked up to the Crater Mountain summit and added it to my list of future hikes.

Day 5: Driving over Sonora Pass on Hwy 108 on the way home

As much as I enjoy the drive over Sonora Pass on Highway 108, I rarely stop much along the way. Today I'll make a few stops.
